Traditional Radiation uses photons (x-ray) and has an entrance and an exit dose. Depending on how many gys (pronounced grays) are used to treat the tumor, surrounding healthy tissue can also receive an unhealthy dose of radiation. You can see when protons are used to treat the same rib lesion, less radiation is administered to surrounding healthy tissue.
