Skin care information and tips:
As stated above, toward the end of your child’s treatment process, the radiated skin may become pink and itchy. In some cases, the skin could blister and flake. What to do:
- Rinse the treated area with warm water, do not rub or scrub on it. Do not use soap on the treated area either
- Wear loose fitting cotton clothing that will not rub the treated area
- Do not put anything hot or cold on the treated area and do not let the treated area be exposed to the sun
- Try not to let your child scratch the treatment area. If it is becoming a problem, inform your child’s nurse or doctor so some medicine(s) can be prescribed to relieve the itching
You will receive specific information about your child’s type of radiation treatment and this information will include what to do in case of any problems and how to manage these specific side effects. Tell your child’s doctor or nurse if your child is experiencing any of these side effects.
